The future of Mitchley Avenue Surgery

From 31 March 2025, Mitchley Avenue Surgery will close as the building owner retires and the property is sold. Starting 1 April 2025, all GP services will move to Selsdon Park Medical Practice, a modern facility offering high-quality care. Patients will benefit from continuity with many familiar clinical and administrative staff at the new location.

From Monday 31 March 2025, the Mitchley Avenue surgery will no longer be available to use as a doctor’s surgery as the owner of the building plans to retire and put the building on the market.

From 1 April 2025, all GP services will take place at Selsdon Park Medical Practice, a modern and fully equipped facility designed to deliver high quality care. Many of the same clinical and administrative team members will be providing care at the new location, ensuring continuity and consistency for patients.

Patients do not need to take any action as registration, medical records and care plans will remain unaffected by the move.

We have worked closely with the practice to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible and informed patients directly by letter in December 2024.

Frequently asked questions

Why are all clinical services moving from Mitchley Avenue to Selsdon Park?

The doctors at Mitchley Avenue, Dr Woolf and Dr French, will both be leaving on 31 March 2025.  After many years of dedicated service to his patients, Dr Woolf will be retiring, and Dr French will be relocating out of the area. After they leave, the building will no longer be available as a GP surgery, so all services will move over to the main site, Selsdon Park Medical Practice. Mitchley Avenue and Selsdon Park Medical Practice have been working together for a long time and officially merged in April 2022.

Selsdon Park is a popular surgery with excellent patient survey results. This move will allow patients to continue to benefit from the high level of services being delivered by a large pool of experienced clinicians at the modern facilities at Selsdon Park.

Do I need to do anything to continue receiving medical services from Selsdon Park Medical Practice after 31^st March 2025? 

No – all patients currently visiting Mitchley Avenue are already registered with Selsdon Park, so there is no need to do anything. You can access all Selsdon Park services online, by phone or in person via the contact details at the top of this letter

Do I need to do anything to make sure I continue to get my regular medication?  

No – if you take regular medication, there will be no change in how you order and receive your medication. You can continue to order via the NHS app or by contacting Selsdon Park.  

Will it still be possible to see the same GPs and nurses when the branch closes?  

Although Drs Woolf and French will be leaving, Nurses Caroline and Vicky, Paramedic Advanced Practitioner Craig and GP Dr Velani will be moving to Selsdon Park from 1^st April 2025, along with many of the reception and admin staff, so patients will still see a lot of familiar faces.  

Will opening hours be the same at Selsdon Park Medical Practice?

As well as being open from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm, Monday to Friday, Selsdon Park Medical Practice has extended opening hours on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings until 8:00 pm, with some early morning sessions from 7.30 am-8:00 am from Monday to Friday.

How can I get to Selsdon Park Medical Practice?  

Selsdon Park is about a mile from Mitchley Avenue Surgery, opposite Sainsbury’s car park. Selsdon Park is well served by the 412, 409, and 64 bus routes. There is also ample car parking on the adjoining side roads.

How will housebound and vulnerable patients be seen?  

Patients who are housebound will continue to receive home visits as long as they are within the catchment area of our practice, which will remain the same as before.   

Can I register with another GP surgery?  

You do not need to register with a new GP surgery; however, if you wish to, you can find details of other surgeries in the area Visit nhs.uk to find a GP surgery near you.

2023 GP Rankings: The top 10 GP practices in south west London

The GP Patient Survey revealed how doctors' surgeries across Wandsworth, Croydon, Sutton, Merton, Kingston and Richmond were rated for 2023. 

The annual survey saw around 760,000 patients complete a questionnaire asking about their experiences with the local GP surgery.

The NHS England figures showed overall satisfaction in GPs across England fell to its lowest level since the survey began in 2018, with 71.3% of patients rating the service as "good" or "very good" in 2023 – down from 72.4% in 2022.

But where are the highest-rated GP practices in south west London?

The top 10 GP Practices in the region were ranked by the percentage of people who rated the service as good or very good, excluding those with fewer than 100 responses.

1. Wrythe Green Surgery

Of the 124 people who responded to the GP survey, 96.8% described their overall experience of Wrythe Green Surgery as "good" or "very good".

Some 64.7% said the practice was very good, while 32.1% said it was good. No one said the service was poor or very poor.

2. Richmond Lock Surgery

Coming in second was Richmond Lock Surgery, where 58.1% of 125 people said their experience at the practice was very good, and 37.8% described it as good.

It meant the practice was rated at least good by 96% of patients, making it the second-highest rated practice in south west London.

3. Selsdon Park Medical Practice & Mitchley Avenue Surgery

Selsdon Park Medical Practice came in third with a score of 95% and first in Croydon.

Some 64.9% of patients at the practice rated the service as very good, while a further 30.1% believed it was just good.
